Range Day Done Right: A Multi-Part Guide – Starting with Safety and PPE

After someone picks their first gun for concealed carry or home defense, the next question I get most often is: “Okay, now what? How do I actually practice this safely?” I’ve watched hundreds head to the range for the first time overly excited, noticeably nervous, and secretly hoping there are instructions somewhere. The truth is, the range can feel intimidating at first, but with the right mindset and basic gear, it becomes one of the best parts of responsible ownership.

Why Safety Comes First (and Why PPE Is Non-Negotiable)

Range safety isn’t just a list of rules; it’s about building habits that prevent accidents and make shooting enjoyable instead of stressful. One bad habit can ruin a day (or worse), but good ones stick for life. I’ve had customers come back after their first trip and say, “I wish I’d known this before because I would’ve been way less nervous.” Better to hear it now.

The two biggest risks at the range are hearing damage and eye injuries. Gunshots are loud enough to cause permanent hearing loss in seconds, and brass ejects hot and fast; I’ve seen plenty of close calls with eyes. PPE isn’t optional; it’s the first line of defense.

Electronic muffs are what I recommend to almost everyone starting out. They amplify quiet sounds (like range commands or instructors talking) while instantly blocking loud gunshots. This makes communication easy and keeps you aware of what’s going on around you.  

Traditional plugs work in a pinch, but they muffle everything and make it harder to hear what’s happening. I trust brands like Walker’s Game Ear (Razor series is popular and affordable). Electronic muffs usually run $40–$80. In my experience, customers who skip electronics often regret it after one session; the amplification makes the whole experience more comfortable and safer.

Eye Protection  

ANSI-rated shooting glasses are a must. Get clear for indoor ranges, tinted for bright outdoor ones, wraparound style to block side-ejected brass. Cheap safety glasses from a hardware store work in a pinch, but dedicated shooting glasses are more comfortable and durable. Look for ones with anti-fog coating and good side shields.

A Good Range Bag: The Foundation for a Smooth First Trip

Once you have PPE, you need something to carry it all in—plus your gun, ammo, and other basics. A dedicated range bag keeps everything organized, protected, and ready to go, so you don’t forget critical items or fumble around at the range.  

For beginners, I recommend a medium-sized bag with separate compartments: padded sleeves for guns, pockets for ammo/mags, dedicated spots for PPE (so ear muffs don’t get crushed), and extra pockets for tools or targets. Avoid cheap backpacks—they crumple and make it hard to find things quickly.  

Durable materials like 600D polyester or ballistic nylon hold up to range abuse. Look for padded pistol sleeves, a firm base so it stands upright, and enough room for 1–2 guns plus essentials. Basic Range Rules & Mindset for Your First Trip

The four universal rules never change:

1. Treat every gun as if it is loaded.  

2. Never point the muzzle at anything you’re not willing to destroy.  

3. Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.  

4. Be sure of your target and what’s beyond it.  

Range-specific: Listen to the Range Safety Officer (RSO), follow hot/cold line commands, no running or horseplay, keep guns pointed downrange. If you’re new, ask questions—most ranges are welcoming to beginners.  

Mindset tip: Stay calm, breathe, and go slow. First trips can feel overwhelming, but everyone starts somewhere. I’ve seen people freeze on their first “cease fire” command—totally normal. Just listen, follow along, and you’ll settle in fast.

Quick Pre-Range Checklist for Success

Before you leave home: 

– Gun (unloaded, cased)  

– Ammo (range ammo not the expensive self defense kind)  

– PPE (hearing + eye)  

– Range bag with basics (cleaning kit if you want, water)  

– ID/membership card if required  

– Phone charged for emergencies and to capture that perfect social media post
