Range Day Done Right: Part 2 – 3 Essential Drills Every New Shooter Should Master

Range Day Done Right: Part 2 – 3 Essential Drills Every New Shooter Should Master

Now that you’ve got the safety basics down, it’s time to make every trip to the range actually count. Random shooting might be fun for a few minutes, but focused drills are what turn a new shooter into a confident, competent one.

In this second part of the Range Day Done Right series, I’m sharing the three drills I recommend most to beginners. These drills are safe, widely allowed at almost every indoor and outdoor range, require minimal equipment, and deliver the biggest improvement in the shortest amount of time. I’ve seen them help hundreds of new shooters build real skill and confidence quickly.

Most new shooters show up, shoot a box of ammo at a big target, and leave without improving much. These three drills give you a clear purpose for every round you fire. They focus on the fundamentals that matter most: sight alignment, trigger control, follow-up shots, and reloading under stress — all while staying safe and range-friendly.
Let’s get into them.

Equipment Needed

  • Your handgun of choice
  • 50–75 rounds of practice ammo
  • A standard paper target (or even a small dot on a larger target)
  • Your normal range setup (bench or standing position)

How to Perform It Properly

Set your target at 7–10 yards. Take a proper stance, align your sights carefully on the center of the target, and focus on the front sight. Slowly squeeze the trigger straight back without disturbing the sights. The goal is a surprise break, you want the gun to fire without flinching or pushing it.

Fire one shot at a time, reset your grip and sights, and repeat. Do 5–10 slow, deliberate shots per string. If your shots are grouping tightly, gradually speed up while maintaining control.

Why You Should Do This Drill

This is the foundation of accurate shooting. Most accuracy problems come from poor sight alignment or jerking the trigger. Mastering this drill teaches your body to keep the gun steady and squeeze the trigger smoothly. New shooters who spend time here see dramatic improvements in grouping within just a few sessions.

Equipment Needed

  • Your handgun of choice
  • 50–75 rounds of practice ammo
  • A standard paper target

How to Perform It Properly

From a ready position (low ready or from the bench), present the gun, align your sights, and fire two shots as quickly as you can recover the sights between them. The goal is two well-placed shots on target, not just speed. Start slow and deliberate, then gradually increase speed while keeping both shots inside the target zone. Do 5–8 pairs per string, then rest and evaluate your groups.

Why You Should Do This Drill

In a real defensive situation, you rarely fire just one shot. This drill teaches sight recovery, trigger reset, and follow-up shots under control. It bridges the gap between slow, perfect shots and the reality of needing multiple hits quickly. Most new shooters improve their speed and accuracy noticeably after practicing controlled pairs.

Range Day Done Right: Part 2 – 3 Essential Drills Every New Shooter Should Master

Equipment Needed

  • Your handgun of choice
  • Spare magazine or speed loader (for revolvers)
  • 30–50 rounds of practice ammo

How to Perform It Properly

Start with an empty gun (slide locked back or cylinder open). Have a loaded magazine or speed loader ready on the bench. On command (or mentally), insert the magazine or reload the cylinder as quickly and smoothly as possible, then chamber a round or close the cylinder and fire one or two shots on target.

Focus on smooth, deliberate movement first. Speed comes with practice. Do 8–10 reloads per session.

Why You Should Do This Drill

Malfunctions and empty guns happen. Being able to reload quickly and safely under stress is a critical skill. This bench/low-ready version is safe for almost every range and builds muscle memory without requiring drawing from a holster (which many ranges prohibit). It gives you confidence that you can keep the gun running when it matters.

A good beginner session might look like this:

  • 10–15 minutes warming up with Drill 1 (slow, deliberate shots)
  • 15–20 minutes on Drill 2 (controlled pairs)
  • 10–15 minutes on Drill 3 (reloads)
  • Finish with 20–30 rounds of fun shooting on a larger target

Keep sessions to 100–150 rounds max when starting out. Quality matters more than quantity.

These three drills; Sight Alignment & Trigger Control, Controlled Pairs, and Emergency Reload; form a simple but powerful foundation. Do them consistently and you’ll see real improvement in accuracy, speed, and confidence every time you go to the range.

If you’re ready to put these drills into practice, browse range bags, practice ammo, and targets on Top Shelf Munitions. We’re always happy to help you find what you need.
